Delaware firefighter who died while responding to accident honored in Sussex
Thomas “Tommy” Berry III died Tuesday afternoon when he stopped to help a motorist on Route 9.
In Delaware, flags will be flown at half-staff for a week to commemorate the death of a local paramedic and volunteer firefighter.
Thomas “Tommy” Berry III, a 23-year-old logistics technician with Sussex County Emergency Services and volunteer firefighter/EMS with the Georgetown and Ellendale fire departments, died on the afternoon of August 13.
He stopped to help a driver who had crashed into a power pole on Route 9 when it collapsed and power lines fell. Berry died at the scene, according to police.
In honor of his service, Governor John Carney ordered on August 15 that Delaware flags at all state facilities be flown at half-staff until sunset on August 22.

“Most people run from danger. And then there is a small elite who put themselves in dangerous situations to help others,” Carney said. “Thomas Berry was one of those people who made the ultimate sacrifice to help a neighbor in need. Tracey and I are praying for Mr. Berry’s family, friends, colleagues in Sussex County and the volunteers of the Georgetown and Ellendale fire departments.”
