On Wednesday, flags in Delaware will be flown at half-staff to mark National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, Governor John Carney announced.

Flags are flying at half-staff this week in honor of Thomas “Tommy” Berry III, a 23-year-old logistics technician with Sussex County Emergency Services and volunteer firefighter/EMT with the Georgetown and Ellendale fire departments. He died Aug. 13 when he stopped to help a motorist who had struck a utility pole on Route 9.

National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day is intended to educate the public about the serious dangers of fentanyl poisoning from counterfeit pills and other illegal drugs, according to the DEA.
