SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A 44-year-old West Valley City man has been charged with multiple counts after allegedly making death threats against Salt Lake County officials.
Ryan Gregory Bracken was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 21, 2024, after his arrest on April 4, 2024.
He is charged with five counts of stalking and one count of interstate threatening after making a series of threatening calls to various county offices.
According to court documents, on April 1, 2024, Bracken left a voicemail for the Salt Lake County Recorder’s Office accusing the recorder and an employee of treason and adding that the punishment for treason is death. Prior to this message, Bracken allegedly made several other abusive and threatening calls to the office.
The next day, Bracken contacted the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office and claimed that there had been “a fraudulent sheriff’s auction on his property.” He threatened to “shoot the first person that shows up to scare him away.” He reportedly mentioned that he owned a 7.62-millimeter firearm.
That same day, Bracken called the sheriff’s office again and warned that if his property was sold, “the sheriff would be held responsible for treason and dangled on a rope.”
Records show that in April 2024 alone, Bracken made a total of 32 calls to several county offices, including the sheriff’s office and the assessor’s office.
Bracken’s first court appearance is scheduled for August 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. before U.S. Federal Judge Orrin G. Hatch in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City.
The case is being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecution is being handled by the Utah District Attorney’s Office.
