TOMLIN HAS A LIST OF THINGS HE WANTS TO SEE IN THE OPENING GAME ON FRIDAY NIGHT

Coach Mike Tomlin would like to see something other than Steelers vs. Steelers when the team takes on the Houston Texans tomorrow night at Acrisure Stadium. Yesterday, the Steelers put on their gear again during a passionate practice at St. Vincent College.

Russell Wilson participated in all practice and is listed as the starting quarterback on the initial preseason roster, but will not play tomorrow night. Tomlin also ruled out guard Isaac Seumalo and defensive veterans Cam Heyward, Minka Fitzpatrick, TJ Watt, Patrick Queen and Alex Highsmith.

The coach says Houston is the right opponent for the Steelers as they already played in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio last week this preseason.

Tomlin has ticked off a list of things he expects from the Steelers tomorrow night.

Tomlin doesn’t want to read too much into the outcome of the game, but is curious to see how his young players react to “stadium football.”

Following reports yesterday afternoon that the Steelers and 49ers had agreed to a trade for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, no deal has been announced by either team. Various NFL sources said a trade would not involve any player currently on the Steelers’ roster, but would instead involve draft picks. An earlier report claimed the 49ers were asking for two future No. 1 overall draft picks. Mike Tomlin responded to a reporter’s question about a trade by saying, “I’ll let you (the media) speculate on that.”

The Steelers signed rookie free agent inside linebacker Easton Gibbs, who began the preseason on Seattle’s non-football injured list and was released last week. He was not drafted this year out of Wyoming, where he had 109 tackles last season, 47 of them solo, with one interception and two forced fumbles. Linebacker Tyler Murray was released/injured.

The first week of the preseason begins tonight with a game between the Patriots and the Panthers and the Giants and the Lions. New York and Detroit will face off after both teams were fined by the NFL this week for fighting during joint practices.
