CASTLE ROCK – Day 3 of the 2024 BMW Championship is over. Here’s a look at some of the best and some of the uglier moments at Castle Pines Golf Club.
The wow moments
• Billy Horschel played the opening hole as perfectly as possible. He hit a drive 350 yards to the right of the fairway and then hit his second shot with a 3-wood onto the green. The ball spun back about three feet short of the hole. He finished with an eagle.
• On the 11th hole, Collin Morikawa hit his first shot into the left bunker and then missed it again from the sand, sending the ball flying off the edge of the green. But he saved par with a brilliant recovery – a perfectly timed right-to-left putt that dropped into the net from 62 feet.
• While Collin Morikawa climbed the leaderboard on Saturday, finishing with a 7-under-par total, he nearly aced the par-3 11th hole. His 192-yard tee shot landed just 13 inches from the hole, drawing cheers from the stands before he holed out for birdie.
The ugly moments
• Cam Davis made birdies on the first two holes of the day before the par-4 third brought him back down to earth. He hit his tee shot into the water, then his drop shot landed in the grass out of bounds. By the time he needed two putts, he had triple bogey.
• A tough day for Sahith Theegala was capped by two double bogeys on the first hole, including one on the par-3 7th. Theegala hit his tee shot in the sand, hit it 24 feet past the hole, and then took three putts with a missed three-foot putt resulting in a bogey.
• Akshay Bhatia collapsed with a quadruple bogey on the par-4 third hole. Bhatia hit his driver 329 yards down the right-hand path, way out of bounds. Two shots later, it landed in the water in front of the green. Three shots later, he finally holed the snowman.
