What is Megalopolis about?
“Megalopolis is a Roman epic set in an imagined modern America,” the official synopsis reads. “The city of New Rome must change, leading to conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who wants to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opponent, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains loyal to a regressive status quo and upholds greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties and forces her to explore what she believes humanity truly deserves.”
The cast of the film includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman.
Coppola produces the film along with Barry Hirsch, Fred Roos and Michael Bederman.
Coppola – known for producing all three films in the Godfather trilogy, as well as Apocalypse Now (1979), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and others – spent around $120 million of his own money to finance the film, which is set to premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
“Francis is a legend,” Adam Fogelson of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group previously said of Megalopolis. “For many of us, his gifts for cinema were one of the inspirations to dedicate our own careers to film. It is a true privilege to work with him and bring this incredible, daring and utterly unique film to moviegoers. At Lionsgate, we strive to be a home for bold and daring artists, and Megalopolis proves that there is no one bolder or more daring than the maestro Francis Ford Coppola.”
Megalopolis will be released in US theaters on September 27, 2024 by Lionsgate Studios.
