MASON, Ohio — There may be something wrong with Pablo Carreno Busta’s ATP ranking (No. 513), which matches Mason’s area code the week of the Cincinnati Open.
This is just one explanation for why the 33-year-old Spaniard, who is taking part in only his fourth ATP Tour event this season, could cause the biggest surprise of the tournament so far.
On Wednesday, Carreno Busta defeated Sebastian Korda, who is ranked 15th in the world after an ATP 500 title in Washington and reaching the semifinals in Montreal, his highest ranking in his career so far, in two sets (7-5, 6-1).
For Carreno Busta, it is his first win over a top-20 opponent since 2022 and he is the lowest-ranked match winner in Cincinnati since 2015. In the round of 32, he will face qualifier Max Purcell.

Andreeva conquers Center Court in Cincinnati debut
Emma Navarro, ranked 13th in the world, was full of momentum in Mason. Last week in Toronto she reached her best placing of her career so far after reaching the semifinals.
The 23-year-old American had won 15 matches against top-50 opponents this season, but lost to number 24 Mirra Andreeva in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) on Center Court in the day session on Wednesday in a match that lasted just over an hour.
In her Cincinnati Open debut, Andreeva claimed her 10th win against a top-20 opponent by dominating first serves (82% win rate), converting 4 of 8 break points and capitalizing on five double faults from Navarro.

The world number 1 does her job
The fans of Center Court were able to see the two world number ones in action on Wednesday.
Let’s start with ATP No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who took the lead in the rankings in June. Sinner struggled with hip injuries and was eliminated in the quarterfinals in Montreal on Saturday. Sinner was put under pressure by 19-year-old American Alex Michelsen, but a strong serve (nine aces) helped the Italian to a straight-set victory, 6-4, 7-5.

WTA No. 1 Iga Swiatek opened the night session on Centre Court with a 22-minute first set, breaking Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva three times to win 6-0. She took a 5-2 lead in the second set thanks to seven service aces and looked set to wrap up the match in less than an hour. But Gracheva fought back, breaking twice and forcing a 6-6 draw before winning a 10-8 tiebreak.
At 2-2 in the third set, Swiatek recovered and broke Gracheva’s serve twice before holding her own serve to win the set 6-2.
Swiatek’s failure in the second set was her failure to save break points. Gracheva saved five of the six break points she faced on serve, something she will need to improve on before she faces Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the round of 16 on Friday.
She said after the match that she was tense in the second set and her playing style changed. One factor that may have contributed is that this is the first time she has played on hard courts since competing in Biel, Switzerland, in April.
“It’s getting a little harder to get a feel for the game now, but that’s normal. We always need a few games to get used to the surface. Here, the transition from the slowest to the fastest surface is probably the most difficult,” said Swiatek.
Wozniacki triumphs on return to Cincinnati, WTA Top 100
Caroline Wozniacki faced Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina for the third time this year and eventually won 6-2, 6-4. It is her first victory in Cincinnati since 2017; she had lost her opening match in 2023, 2019 and 2018.
In the final match of the day in the stands, Wozniacki converted three break points to win the first set and then relied on her serve in the second set, serving all six aces in the second set and making just one double fault.
The first-round win is another step in the right direction for Wozniacki. This time last year, she was ranked 632nd in the world and finished 2023 ranked 236th. In her match against Kalinina, she showed more of the defensive style of tennis she has become known for.
Wozniacki will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 32.
