Strolling through downtown Salem on a beautiful afternoon or evening, you might find Jeffrey Lilley leading a group of visitors through cobblestone streets and back alleys. In 2021, Jeffrey decided to open a historical fact-based tour company that delves into the compelling history of Salem, Massachusetts. Jeffrey believes that “it’s the real history of Salem itself, the real stories, that make up the compelling content that people want to learn about year after year.”

Before Jeffrey rebranded the travel company into its current incarnation, Salem Uncovered, it was called Better Than Fiction, which underscored his philosophy that you don’t have to make up content when you live in a place surrounded by such rich and diverse history. Before coming to Salem, Jeffrey spent much of his time abroad, both in an academic setting and as a U.S. Marine. Both his time abroad and his childhood in the woods of New England inspired him to share the often overlooked but always compelling story of a destination. This is what Jeffrey believes is at the core of a destination: the deep history and rich cultural fabric that spans generations. It is in these historical threads that we can truly appreciate the beauty of the entire whole, or in this case, the robust history of a destination.

Jeffrey’s tours begin at a place where he himself helped create a piece of local history. In 1906, legendary magician Harry Houdini delighted Salem residents and visitors alike with a series of shows at the Essex Street Theater, preceded by a display performance held at the Salem Police Station where he escaped from a cell, shackles, and the building itself. The site where this trick once took place is now an office building, but here in Salem it is commemorated in the small alley between 15 and 19 Front Street and is known as Houdini Way. This new ordinance naming the historic right of way was presented to the City Council by Jeffrey and passed by the City of Salem on July 15, 2021.

With tours Thursday through Monday at 3:00pm and 7:00pm (and many more in October), Salem Uncovered offers both day and night tours that will satisfy even the most voracious history buffs, covering both the Salem Witch Trials and Salem’s dark history. Jeffrey not only uncovers the town’s fascinating history, but brings the content to life with his quick-witted and hilarious banter. Jeffrey has lived in Salem, MA for 6 years and loves sharing his stories. On Salem Uncovered’s tours, you’ll come across a wealth of famous landmarks, but also lesser-known gems. Jeffrey allows tour participants a “behind the scenes” of Salem, MA and invites guests to join him on the journey.
