Reds call up Casey Kelly and DFA Alan Busenitz

Reds call up Casey Kelly and DFA Alan Busenitz

The Cincinnati Reds made two moves to their roster today before playing the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cincinnati called up right-handed pitcher Casey Kelly from Triple-A Louisville. He was not on the 40-man roster, but the Reds made the same option move to both the 26-man and 40-man rosters, as they designated right-handed reliever Alan Busenitz for assignment.

Busenitz pitched against the Pirates on Friday night and allowed four runs on four hits in one inning. He had just been called up from Triple-A to the major leagues that same day. It was his first major league appearance of the year. If Busenitz makes it through waivers, he has the option to become a free agent, as he has been designated for assignment and made it through waivers in the past. He could also accept his move to the minor leagues if he chooses.

Casey Kelly was called up to help fill the missing innings. He was not in the organization three weeks ago. Cincinnati signed Kelly out of his contract, which saw him pitch in Korea. Kelly, the son of Triple-A manager Pat Kelly, has been pitching in the KBO since 2019. He made two starts with Louisville before being called up this afternoon.

The 34-year-old was active as a pitcher in parts of four major league seasons – his last major league time was in 2018 with the San Francisco Giants. In 26 games, he reached a record of 2-11 and recorded an ERA of 5.46 as a major league player between 2012 and 2018.

While pitching in the KBO from 2019-2024, he went 73-46 with a 3.25 ERA in 163 starts. He started between 27 and 30 games each year between 2019 and 2023 and had made 19 starts before being signed by the Reds this season. You can see his career stats here.
