Since 2018, Kelly Reilly has been one of the TV’s Most Popular Badass Characters in Beth Duttonbut as with all movie characters whose last name is not “Simpson”, Beth’s Yellowstone The story could soon come to an end if the last episodes of season 5 arrived at Paramount Network. Fortunately, the actress has already secured her next leading role, but it sounds like it will be far more stressful than a normal day on the ranch.
Reilly will star in a new series across the pond, closer to home, which will be titled Under salt marshesThe new show is described as a “gripping crime thriller” and is set in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen, which lies exactly between intimidating mountains and the sea.
What is Kelly Reilly’s new show about?
In the role of Jackie Ellis, Reilly embodies a former detective who is currently making ends meet as a teacher and whose past catches up with her in a tragic way. When a violent storm brews over the waters off Morfa Halen, the body of an 8-year-old boy washes up, apparently drowned.
The boy turns out to be one of Jackie’s students, and the incident causes shock and uproar in the small town, similar to an unsolved case three years ago. Back then, Jackie’s niece Nessa disappeared, and the investigation ruined the detective’s career.
Jackie’s former partner, Det. Eric Bull, is investigating the boy’s death. He is called back to Morfa Halen years after failing to solve Nessa’s disappearance, and tensions are running high. The two come together once again to bring justice to the dead while uncovering the town’s long-hidden secrets and corpses, as the looming storm threatens to naturally end their investigations.
Under salt marshes is the creation of Form Director Claire Oakley, who will also take on co-writing duties in addition to her role as executive producer and supervising director. Jonathan Harbottle and Nikita Lalwani will also serve as co-writers, while Mary Nighy will direct the third and fourth episodes. Watch Oakley’s excited reaction to the casting news:
I’m glad to hear that Reilly’s character will be strong-willed and not emotionally weakened. But I’ll still be concerned when dead and/or missing children are involved.
The series will be broadcast as a Sky Original and produced by Little Door Productions in association with Sky Studios. Filming is due to begin later this year, so it is likely to be broadcast after the TV schedule 2024 is over.
Will Kelly Reilly return to the Yellowstone franchise after season 5?
During the long break between new Yellowstone episodes, Kelly Reilly was one of several cast members expected to reprise their favorite roles for a sequel series temporarily titled 2024. Later, reports surfaced suggesting that salary disputes could be a possible obstacle. The actress seemed to refute the rumors but has never clarified whether Beth Dutton’s TV journey will continue or not.
Any optimism about Beth’s return was apparently recently dashed when it was confirmed that Michelle Pfeiffer will take on the lead role in the sequel series, now titled MadisonPatrick J. Adams is also part of the cast and rumors say Kurt Russell will take on another male lead role.
Of course, there is room for the return of familiar characters to make the whole thing a legitimate Yellowstone series, but with Reilly taking on a new role in a completely different show, things are not looking so good for Beth. Nevertheless, Under salt marshes is only planned as a six-episode series, so it is possible that Reilly will be shooting scenes for Madison before you start your trip to Wales.
Not that Kelly Reilly’s career revolves exclusively around life on the Yellowstone Ranch. On the film side, she has found a taste for horror after starring in Eli2021 The CursedAnd 2023 A ghost in VeniceOn television, she appeared in several episodes of the French comedy series Greek salad in 2023, but Under salt marshes will be her first leading role on television since she was first cast as Beth Dutton.
While you wait for the new show, don’t forget that all YellowstoneThe current episodes can be streamed completely with a Peacock subscriptionand that the show will finally return in November for the second half of Season 5.
