The Jacksonville Jaguars have their work cut out for them. After an encouraging 3-0 preseason, they must trim their roster down to 53 players by cutdown day at 4 p.m. ET. This year, that’s August 27. That will be a difficult task considering this is the deepest team Jags head coach Doug Pederson has managed since taking over in 2022.
Of course, general manager Trent Baalke has control over roster decisions, but he will work in concert with Pederson to ensure Jacksonville finishes with the best 53 players. Franchise cornerstones like Trevor Lawrence, pass rusher Josh Hines-Allen and cornerback Tyson Campbell won’t have to worry about finding a spot.
On the other hand, there are several players in the bottom half of the roster that will present some difficult decisions for the team’s management. Jacksonville is well-stocked at wide receiver, linebacker, safety and the interior defensive line.
This, in turn, will cause the team to part ways with players they would like to keep. On the other hand, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As Pederson recently told the media, if the Jaguars cut ties with a good player, it means they’re keeping an even better one. In addition, they’ll get a chance to sign some of them to the practice squad if they get through the waiver list.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at the cuts the Jaguars are making ahead of roster reduction day.
The Jaguars release Denzel Mims on August 25
After the victory over the Atlanta Falcons, the Jags parted ways with Denzel Mims. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media first reported on the move. Mims was an outsider and had to fight hard to secure a spot on the roster. The former Baylor Golden Bear finished the preseason with just one catch for seven yards. The fact that he didn’t participate in the special teams ultimately sealed his fate.
The Jaguars signed EJ Perry on August 21
CJ Beathard suffered a groin injury in Week 2 of the preseason. It’s hard to say how much time he will miss, but team management has signed quarterback EJ Perry to fill the void left by his absence. The Browns product attempted two passes for four yards in the final game of the preseason.
The Jaguars will waive WR Brevin Easton on August 20
This was no surprise. Since the Jags had several options for the wide receiver, they decided not to sign Brevin Easton before the season finale. His chances of making the team were slim, and the decision to part ways gave the Jaguars officials a better idea of the position.
