Kentucky joins national initiative to enforce sober driving during Labor Day

Transportation officials in the U.S. state of Kentucky are running a Labor Day campaign to highlight the importance of sober driving.

Bill Bell, executive director of the Office of Highway Safety, said that while police are on the lookout for drunk drivers year-round, this event will draw special attention to a problem that affects many Kentucky residents each year.

“Right now, we’re in the middle of the ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled’ campaign, which is a high-profile enforcement campaign. That means we want to make sure that all drivers are aware of this campaign and that the police will be out in force looking for drunk drivers. And they’ll be doing that all Labor Day weekend,” Bell said.

Bell said drunk driving is a nationwide problem and that Kentucky is no exception.

“One of the biggest issues with highway safety is impairment. When it comes to alcohol-related impairment, Kentucky is below the national average, which is great. However, when you include driving under the influence, we are closer to the national average,” Bell said.

Last year, there were a total of 4,324 crashes in Kentucky involving a drunk driver, resulting in 2,085 injuries and 181 deaths. During Labor Day weekend last year, there were 77 crashes involving a drunk driver, resulting in 29 injuries and six deaths.

Bell said these numbers are unacceptable and he hopes the campaign will help people make smarter choices when it comes to celebrating this year.

Officials said if anyone sees an impaired driver, they should stop and call police. The KSP toll-free hotline is 1-800-222-5555. They ask that you provide vehicle description, license plate number, location and, if possible, direction of travel.
