Jo Potter: It is important that we maintain our standards

JO POTTER says it is important Rangers maintain their high standards from the start of the season after scoring nine goals for the second time in four days in this afternoon’s triumph over Montrose.

The win at Links Park was secured by Katie Wilkinson’s third hat-trick since taking charge at the club, taking the team’s tally to 33 goals in their first four league games.

This means that the Gers are making relentless progress at the top of the SWPL table, although Potter is keen to stress that the Light Blues cannot take their eye off the ball for a second.

Speaking to RangersTV after today’s win, the Gers head coach said: “You can’t take your eyes off the ball for a moment.

“We have to make sure we keep pushing and keep our standards high. Our daily work is very important for that and the players are doing a great job and giving me their all every day.

“We have to make sure we continue that over the next few weeks as we have difficult games ahead of us.

“This is something we need to continue to push forward and strive for.

“It’s never easy and we created a lot of good chances today; the Montrose goalkeeper played a very, very good game and kept the result as it was.

“We are happier today than on Wednesday and are pleased with a clean sheet and another nine goals.

“I told them at half-time that we were a bit listless. We probably had too many touches at the bottom of the pitch and not enough in and around their penalty area.

“I wanted them to sharpen it up a bit more. We obviously tweaked it a bit at half-time to help us in and around their penalty area and get a bit more space.

“I’m happy with how we managed to optimise things and get going again. We learned a lot today and it’s important that we take that with us to Dundee United at the weekend.”

By half-time, the Gers had a three-goal lead after Wilkinson completed her hat-trick just minutes into the second half.

The player, who arrived from Southampton in the summer, has been in brilliant form in the first weeks of her career at the Gers, scoring a hat-trick in each of her three appearances this season.

And Potter says she is pleased with her striker’s early contribution as well as the selfless nature of her attacking players.

She added: “(Wilkinson) is always in those positions to score goals. It’s not easy and I think she could have scored a few more. In the end the goalkeeper parried a corner into the top corner that looked to be heading for the goal.

“The most important thing for us is that she scores goals and her confidence grows. Believe it or not, there is still more to be expected from her because she has not had a full pre-season.

“It’s still in its infancy and I hope in three or four weeks it will have more firepower.

“I thought Rio (Hardy) played brilliantly all around today, as well as her selflessness in the penalty area.

“They’re all there to play with each other and it shows. Those are the relationships we’re looking for.”

“I’m happy with the direction they’re going and I know there’s more to come.”
