Daniel Radcliffe has been delighted with his collaboration with Alan Rickmanand shared that he was once “afraid” of his former Harry Potter co star.
The two began working together in the first Harry Potter film, in which Daniel made his debut as a child actor in the role of the title character, while Alan played Potions professor Severus Snape.
In a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Daniel admitted that he initially “so intimidated” by the late “Die Hard” actor when they began working together.
“How can you not be with that voice?” he said. “Even when you hear that voice, you forget how deep it was until it echoes inside you.”
“I was so intimidated by him in the first three films. I was terrified of him and thought, ‘This guy hates me.'”
Over time, the two grew closer, especially after Alan noticed Daniel’s work ethic.
“At some point he saw that I really wanted to do this and work on it,” Daniel said.
“He cut short a vacation in Canada to see me in Equus. He saw every play I did in his lifetime. He took me home afterward and we talked about it.”
Daniel added: “He was one of the first to say, ‘You should look into voice training and research all that stuff.'”
After being shown a 2016 clip of Alan praising him, Daniel said: “I’m so lucky. It’s really nice to hear him say that. Thank you for showing me that.”
In the clip in question, Alan was heard saying: “Just as I did it for seven weeks, they did it for 52 weeks. That was their life from 12 to 22.
“Sometimes you watched from the sidelines and threw in one or two lifelines because there was so little time for it.”
The Indeed… Love The actor added that he felt “tremendous pride” when he saw Daniel in the Broadway musical “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.”
“How dare he dance as well as the New York dancers,” he joked. “He worked hard for it.”
In 2022, Alan Rickman’s diaries were published, documenting his changing feelings towards the younger cast members of Harry Potter.
In a 2008 entry he wrote: “He was just 12, now he’s 19. When did that happen? And he’s sensitive, articulate and smart.”
