The Milwaukee Brewers remain hot, picking up their sixth straight win Tuesday night as they added to the woes of the St. Louis Cardinals and got a three-game series off to a good start with a 3-2 victory at Busch Stadium.
The key to the Brewers’ success in the series opener was their pitching. Frankie Montas pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with a walk and three strikeouts on 89 pitches. Milwaukee’s bullpen then did its job, especially Devin Williams, who put an end to the Cardinals with a scoreless trip to the mound in the ninth inning and earned his fifth save of the season.
“He’s a cold-blooded guy, man,” Montas said of Williams while speaking to media in the locker room after the game (h/t Sportkeeda).
“He’s a fearless guy. Anytime you’re in a position to win, he comes in. You feel pretty good when you win the game, for sure,” Montas said. “When you have a guy like him, you’re not nervous at all. He was named Reliever of the Year twice for a reason.”
Montas relied on the trust that Williams shows in him and the Brewers whenever he is on the mound.
“When this guy is in the game, you feel good because you won the game. Like I said, he’s a cold-blooded guy. He’s not afraid of anything. When all the bases are loaded, he says, ‘I can do this.’ He’s Devin Williams for a reason.”
Williams has been incredible since returning from a long absence. In his first eight appearances this season, Williams has posted a 1.13 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP in eight innings.
