PHILADELPHIA – Divers have discovered a vehicle that, according to a witness, inexplicably plunged into the Schuylkill River Friday morning after it backed into the water while driving on Kelly Drive.
A witness who was fishing at the time of the accident said a four-door sedan was driving on Kelly Drive when it suddenly slammed on the brakes and plunged into the river.
“I was just down here fishing … and saw a car at high speed suddenly slam on the brakes and put it into reverse,” said the witness, who identified himself as Anthony.
After witnessing the accident in the water, Anthony said he called the police and rushed to the vehicle to see if he could help rescue the occupants.
“I was already halfway in the water and had waders on, so I couldn’t go under the water or I would have drowned,” Anthony said.
Marine divers told FOX 29 that poor visibility in the dark, murky water forced them to touch and feel the submerged vehicle.
The officers did not want to comment on whether they had found anyone in the vehicle.
Kelly Drive was closed for a short time but has now reopened.
