City of San Diego workers continued to monitor conditions at the Chollas Operations Yard on Thursday after a large crack developed in the parking lot’s asphalt.

As a precautionary measure, the employee parking lot was evacuated Wednesday and will remain closed to employees and visitors until repairs are completed. The parking lot is located at the closed Chollas Landfill.

According to a press release from the city, monitoring of the site revealed no threat to health and safety.

“The Chollas Operations Yard site is located on a closed landfill and requires ongoing maintenance and monitoring to avoid the natural subsidence that is normal for closed landfills,” said James Hay, deputy director of the Department of Environmental Services. “We took quick action to assess conditions and ensure appropriate system controls remain in place. We will continue to monitor to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.”

While the city conducts repairs at the depot, the bike path and one lane on the north side of College Grove Drive will be affected and traffic controls will be in place.

In addition, employee parking will be diverted to nearby College Grove and Chollas Lake parking lots. There are normally around 1,000 employees working on site.

The Chollas Operations Yard, located on Caminito Chollas in Oak Park, is the primary work site for San Diego’s infrastructure crews responsible for water, sewer, streets and stormwater operations. It is also used for storage of materials and heavy machinery, and as office space.

The Chollas landfill operated for 30 years before closing in 1981. The city manages and monitors closed landfills to ensure compliance with environmental and health regulations.
