Of course, the Obamas, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders made big speeches at the Democratic National Convention last night. But Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago felt more like a dance party than a buttoned-up political event.
DJ Cassidy took the stage in a bright blue double-breasted suit and played music during the event’s ceremonial roll calls for each state as they nominated Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for the Democratic presidential nominations. Minnesota got “1999” by Prince, Kansas got “Carry on Wayward Son” by, well, Kansas. “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen played while New Jersey cast its vote.

Democrats like to emphasize how Harris’ rise has given the party new momentum, and the playlist for the ceremonial roll call definitely fit that mood.
All U.S. states and territories were given the floor to officially announce how their delegates had voted. Each state was given a special “walk-up song” before announcing its vote.

Here you can find out everything you need to know about Tuesday’s appeal.
What is different about this year’s appeal?
This year’s roll call was not an official count of the delegates needed to nominate the presidential candidates, but was more of a ceremonial nature.
That’s because Democrats nominated Harris and Walz before August 7, the original deadline for Ohio state officials to secure spots on the November ballot.
Although the Ohio state legislature passed a bill to change that deadline, Democrats wanted to avoid any legal challenges to the inclusion of their votes on the ballot and instead opted for a virtual vote in which delegates cast their votes for Harris.
Although this year’s vote traditionally went state by state, expressing support for Harris and Walz, it was only ceremonial.
How did the appeal go?
The event largely proceeded with states nominating their delegates for the Harris-Walz ticket in alphabetical order, with a few exceptions.
All 57 delegations from the 50 states and territories of the United States participated in the vote by voice vote.
Were there any states in the order that were assigned special positions?
While traditional roll call counts involve the home state casting the final votes needed for a majority, this year’s count was a little different. President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware received a special place, as did Walz’s delegation from Minnesota and Harris’ delegation from California.
