The Texan prog metal quintet Oceans Of Slumber will release their sixth studio album Where gods dare not speak via Season Of Mist Records on September 13th.
It is the band’s first album for their new label and they have just released their latest single from the upcoming album, The given dreamwhich you can listen to below. The song features a powerful vocal performance from singer Cammie Beverly.
“This is one of the most difficult songs on the album,” explains Beverly. “I sing loudly from the beginning. From the vocal range through the soprano back to the vocal range, there is no break. Singing soprano requires more breath than singing in the middle or alto range. You have to keep the vocal cords tense.”
“We’re programmed with this dream of how our lives are supposed to go,” says Dobber Beverly, band leader, drummer and Cammie’s husband, about the new single. “The white picket fence. A career at the tech company down the street. Two and a half kids and the ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ poster on the wall.”
“When you buy into this idea, you feel like you’re on the right path,” Cammie adds. “But in reality, we’re just blinded. That dream doesn’t exist.”
The epic new single fits the incredibly diverse music selection on Where gods dare not speakwhich includes an atmospheric cover of Chris Isaak’s 1989 hit Evil game.
“We watched a lot of dystopian science fiction films and TV series,” says Dobber. “I had just bought a Le Gibet synthesizer. When I heard the big, piercing synthesizer lines that appear in many of these soundtracks, I got the idea to The given dream as if an alarm goes off in the listener’s head.
“I played these loops myself in real time, all in one take. I actually like Portishead, Sneaker Pimps and all the other trip-hop bands from the ’90s. With this song I wanted to recreate that dub style with a big, hard part at the end.”
