Baddoo scores the game-winning double in the tenth inning as the Tigers catch up and beat the Mariners 3-2

DETROIT (AP) — Akil Baddoo’s pinch-hit double in the 10th inning gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 comeback win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

“It’s a really great win,” said Tigers manager AJ Hinch. “It’s fun to see the adrenaline in our clubhouse.”

The teams played each other for the fifth time in eight days. The Tigers won two of three games in Seattle and beat the Mariners 15-1 on Tuesday night.

“It hurts,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “We know the Tigers are playing well after what they did to us, but we had the game under control and couldn’t finish it off.”

Detroit trailed 2-0 with two outs in the eighth inning, but Matt Vierling hit a double off Yimi Garcia and Kerry Carpenter hit his third home run in two games to tie the game. Carpenter, who was activated from the injured list before Tuesday’s game, had one strikeout in his first three at-bats.

“They did a really good job against me, but I had faced Garcia before,” Carpenter said. “I got a fastball that I knew I could hit.”

Tyler Holton (5-1) held Seattle scoreless in the 10th inning and Collin Snider (2-2) walked Justyn-Henry Malloy to start the bottom of the inning. Zach McKinstry struck out on a bunt attempt, but Baddoo singled for Jake Rogers and hit a deep fly ball over the head of Victor Robles to win the game.

“Skip told me to be ready,” said Baddoo, who split the season between the majors and Triple-A. “It’s great to know that these guys trust me to pull through in a situation like this.”

Mariners starter Bryan Woo allowed four singles and did not walk a single batter in seven scoreless innings. He has pitched twice against the Tigers in seven days and failed to get a decision both times, despite allowing three runs in 13 2/3 innings.

Seattle closer Andrés Muñoz threw a perfect ninth inning and set a franchise record with 12 consecutive hitless appearances.

With only two healthy starting pitchers, the Tigers were forced to use their bullpen multiple times a week for nine innings. Beau Brieske opened against the Mariners before Bryan Sammons took over in the second inning.

Detroit only put one runner in favorable position against Woo, and he struck out Carpenter with runners on first and second base to end the third inning.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead against Sammons in the fifth inning when Dylan Moore scored on a base hit by Jorge Polanco.

Robles struck out to start the eighth inning, but reached first base when Will Vest’s pitch eluded Rogers. Robles reached second base on a groundout before Randy Arozerana hit a hard grounder back to the mound.

Vest threw to third base, but Robles slid past on the tag. Cal Raleigh worked a walk and loaded the bases for Julio Rodríguez.

Rodríguez injured his left ankle while dodging an inside throw, but stayed in the game after receiving attention from the coaching staff, hitting an RBI single to left before being replaced by a pinch runner.

Shelby Miller replaced Vest and ended the inning with the score still 2-0.

“It was a chance to decide the game and we couldn’t add anything more,” said Servais. “It’s a huge opportunity, especially away from home.”

Servais said Rodríguez had no further injuries to the ankle he sprained in July.

“Maybe he needs a day off tomorrow and then we’ll see how it goes,” he said.
