• Dancing mothers Star Kelly Hyland, 53, announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump during a breast self-exam.

• The news came just eight months after she passed a routine mammogram.

• “I was shocked that it had grown so quickly and was scared of the battle that lay ahead of me,” she said.

Eight months after a routine mammogram, Dancing mothers Kelly Hyland was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she released the scary update, she revealed the warning signs that something was wrong.

Little by little, the 53-year-old began to lose weight. “I had lost so much weight that other people noticed and asked for my diet tips, but I hadn’t changed anything in my daily routine that would have caused the weight loss,” she said. E! News.

This got her attention going. She did a breast self-examination and discovered a lump. “I booked a mammogram,” she said. “I had just had one eight months before and the results were clean. However, this new mammogram and ultrasound were not, and showed a mass.”

The diagnosis explained how her health could change so quickly. “It was malignant,” she said of the mass, which means her cells are growing and multiplying uncontrollably, according to the National Cancer Institute. Doctors told her she had stage 1, grade 3 invasive carcinoma, which means it’s growing quickly and more likely to spread, according to the American Cancer Society.

“I went from clean results to a malignant mass within eight months,” said Hyland E! News. It was obviously a lot to take in. “I was shocked that it had grown so quickly and scared of the battle I was in for,” she added.

Still, one of the most difficult moments of the diagnosis was breaking the news to their children Brooke Hyland (26), Paige Hyland (23) and son Josh Hyland (25). Both Paige and Brooke immediately thought of their grandmother, whom they lost to cancer in 2019. “We watched my grandma battle cancer for years, so I knew we were at the beginning of a very long and difficult road,” Brooke said. “I hated to see another important person in my life go through this.”

The diagnosis was made in late March, and Hyland said E! News that she is currently in the second of six chemotherapy treatments, which will be followed by surgery, radiation, and eleven more chemotherapy treatments. ““I have a long way to go,” she says, and her family takes turns accompanying her to her 10-hour treatments to support her.

“The hardest thing for me has been accepting help from the people around me,” she admitted. “However, I am quickly learning that I have a very long and difficult road ahead of me. That is why I have to learn to accept help from others because I am very lucky that there are people who want to take care of me during this time.”
