Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis broke his own world record in the pole vault when he cleared 6.26 metres in his second attempt at the Silesia Diamond League meeting on Sunday.
Duplantis broke the world record for the tenth time, surpassing the 6.25 metres he cleared earlier this month while defending his Olympic gold medal in Paris. It was the third time this year he has broken his own record.
The 24-year-old had brought the crowd at the Stade de France to their feet at the Paris Olympics when he broke the world record for the ninth time, and there was always the feeling that Duplantis was not finished yet.
On Wednesday, Duplantis cleared 6.15 to win in Lausanne, but at the Silesia Stadium in Chorzow, after crossing the six-metre mark, he had to raise the bar to 6.26 and the Polish crowd waited with bated breath.

His first attempt was weak and dampened expectations, but then the Swede flew high, raced onto the track and fell to the ground.
Olympic silver medalist Sam Kendricks of the United States cleared 6.00 metres but then failed to clear 6.08 metres to finish second. Third place went to Paris bronze medalist Emmanouil Karalis of Greece, who also cleared six metres.
Spectators had already witnessed Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen breaking the long-standing world record over 3,000 metres with a time of 7:07.55 minutes, thus beating the record set by Kenyan Daniel Komen in 1996, who ran 7:20.67.
