Uh, Game of Thrones. A chapter of my life that I have revisited many times – but you want to know what has changed? My perception of Sansa Stark.
Let me preface this by saying that World of A Song of Ice and Fire has many characters that you either hate or love. Sansa was undoubtedly one of them for me. Since I started watching the series in 2016 and watched it through to the end, I have never had the fondest thoughts about good old Lady Stark.
But I recently looked again game of Thrones for fun, and I slowly realized that my perception of Sansa, who I initially viewed as an annoying little girl, had completely changed.
Maybe it was because my frontal lobe was fully developed at that time and I finally had the mind think about what the character has been through. Still, I came to the shocking realization that Sansa really isn’t that bad. Not at all. And people need to stop hating her.
Before we get into the character – Sophie Turner was fantastic as Sansa throughout the series
So let’s start by saying that I love Sophie Turner with all my heart. I have so much respect for everyone in the game of Thrones pourbut I have even greater respect for the young men and women who started on this show as children and ended up becoming impressive actors, and who yet, in their younger years, delivered a performance that is almost impossible to top.
Turner is one of those actresses. Although I particularly like her because she used to go to Penn State, my alma mater, we’re only talking about her acting ability here, and she gave it her all from day one. When you see her as a teenager, playing a younger Sansa with that tremor and quake in her voice – it’s hard to portray that kind of emotion at such a young age.
You can only respect her. Honestly, I will support her in whatever she does in the future with this level of acting ability.
Let’s start with the fact that I used to hate Sansa
Okay, now that I’m done praising Turner, let’s move on to Sansa.
I absolutely hated it when I was younger. And I think I know why. When I first watched this show, there were only six seasons available, and although Sansa a lot In these six seasons, her transformation from a high-born lady to a born leader only began to emerge in later seasons.
Then I had to wait Years for the next two seasons, and I think, like with D&D, I just forgot everything she went through. Watching this series straight through with no breaks in content allowed me to fully process her insane character arc and how much she had survived.
But before, I couldn’t stand her. I thought she was just a privileged little lady who had everything in life and just always wanted more. To me, Sansa from Season 1 is still like that, even on rewatch, but boy…now, as an adult, everything changes in Season 2.
In season 2 things started to change
In season 2 we see how Sansa really fights for her life. Her father was killed in one of the most shocking game of Thrones Moments ever, and her brother is now at war with the Lannisters. This is the moment where we see her forced to grow up.
It takes time. much of time. But she’s forced to play Game of Thrones in a way that we haven’t really seen yet – from the inside out, trying to seem as loyal as possible while also gaining allies that might be able to help her escape, like Margaery, but that doesn’t come until Season 3. We see her really start to realize the situation that she’s put herself in.
Her privileged attitude is really out of the window. In seasons 3 and 4, that mentality is put to the test as she does exactly what she’s told to survive, but in season 5… everything changes again.
Season 5 As an adult, I wanted to save her myself and give her a home
I don’t want to spend so much time on Sansa’s story in season 5. It’s disgusting and heartbreaking and makes me sob as an adult every time I see it. When I was younger, it was sad to see, but not nearly as angry as it is today when I realize how much this young woman went through.
Then Ramsay had to come and ruin everything. I’ve read some horrible things about that scene online and all I’m saying is that no matter What Sansa has never said or done anything in the past that she deserved what happened to her. I was forever grateful when Theon was able to get her out of the castle. Honestly, now I want to give her a home too. No one should ever have to go through that.
Until season 6 I didn’t realize how awesome she was
Season 6 is probably one of my favorite Seasons of game of Thrones for different reasons, but now that I watch it again, I realize that this is the moment when Sansa really started to become a leader. Even though she knows nothing about battle strategies, she has the spirit of the nobles she had to live with for years on her side.
She uses this to her advantage and helps Jon Snow gain allies to fight against Ramsey. But not only that, she also pulls a quick punch and gets the army of valley to end the Battle of the Bastards quickly. Do you know how badass she looks as she stands there watching Ramsey and his men get defeated? Ugh, absolute revenge; sweet revenge.
Honestly, she deserves the ending she got after everything she’s been through and how she’s grown
I still don’t necessarily agree with how we ended some stories for Season 8 and overall game of Thrones End. There are some things I still disagree with to this day, and even when I watch it again, I remember how much I not agree with them.
However, I have come to the conclusion that Sansa deserves the title of Queen in the North. She really has everything what she could do to get her home back and show that the Starks deserve to stay in the North. This is a complete turnaround from her childhood – a needy woman who wanted to go south to King’s Landing.
Sure, she can’t fight. She’s not a warrior. She no longer has dragons or direwolves to use as weapons. But she has her mind. She’s a capable young woman who probably grew up in one of the most traumatic ways a girl could imagine… and for that, she deserves my utmost respect and I would support her in a heartbeat.
I still believe that Daenerys should have been queen, that she and Sansa could have worked out something that was not done so quickly How with Bran because Naturally, that was it. Still, I’m glad that at least one of the powerful women I admired on this show got the ending she deserved.
While game of Thrones is long gone, House of the Dragon Season 3 comes in a few years, and who knows? Maybe I’ll like a character there as much as Sansa does now. But maybe another game of Thrones watch again is necessary before we decide. Regardless, she will always be my Queen in the North.
