CHERRY HILL – A skate park is being built here in a park in Camden County.

The $900,000 attraction will be built on North Park Drive, across from the DoubleTree Hotel and next to the county’s seasonal ice skating rink, according to the county.

Construction on the site, which borders the Cooper River on one side, is scheduled to begin in September.

The skateboard facility – part of ongoing improvements to the county park valued at more than $7 million – is expected to be completed by late fall, county spokesman Dan Keashen said.

It is expected to become “a destination for skateboarders throughout Camden County,” said Commissioner Jeff Nash, liaison with the county’s parks department.

“We have been working on this for years and have had intensive conversations and discussions with children, parents and families to achieve this enrichment for our park system,” he said.

Nash predicted the skate park would become “a really defined and designated place for kids of all ages.”

Camden County currently has only one skate park, in Camden.

The project will be funded by the county with the support of state aid, said county spokesman Dan Keashen.

Seacoast Construction, a Middlesex County company, received approval to build the skate park at the July meeting of the county commissioners.

The skate park is the latest of several improvements announced for the county’s park system.

In April, the county opened a $775,000 dog park in Cooper River Park, also on North Park Drive in Cherry Hill.

$2.5 million worth of improvements are being made to the playground at the park on North Park Drive in Pennsauken.

In addition, two playgrounds at Newton Lake Park in Collingswood will be modernized for $1.3 million.

Additionally, construction is underway on a $1.8 million inclusive playground at New Brooklyn Park in Winslow.
