LANSING — Another teenager has been charged in connection with the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy in May, officials said.

Gilmo Mores Nedziwe, 16, of Lansing was charged as an adult Monday with first-degree murder, armed robbery, discharging a firearm from a vehicle causing death and four other weapons offenses, court records show.

He is accused of shooting Ja’Quez Moye-Young on May 4 in the area of West Oakland and Westmoreland Avenue, near the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow’s St. Lawrence campus. Ja’Quez was shot when a planned exchange of shoes and a sweatshirt went awry, a family member said.

A judge denied bail for Nedziwe during the arraignment on Tuesday. A hearing to decide whether he should stand trial on the charges is tentatively scheduled for August 30.

Court records indicate that Nedziwe is represented by an attorney, but the attorney’s name is not listed.

Police have not released details about the killing of Ja’Quez, who attended Eastern High School.

But his mother, Kisha Skinner, told the State Journal he was at home babysitting when he went to a car to trade shoes and a hoodie. Something went wrong and her son was shot before he ran home and collapsed outside, she said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On August 1, Ja’Quez’s family celebrated his 15th birthday with a “Justice for Quez” rally at the State Capitol.

About 50 people attended the event, which included releasing balloons and marching around the Capitol. Participants chanted “Lay down your weapons” and “Justice for Ja’Quez,” ate cake and candy, and sang “Happy Birthday.”

Ja’Quez was the fifth person to die from violence in Lansing this year and the youngest of nine homicide victims reported by police in the city in 2024.
